Estrogen dominance means that you can have low, normal, or high estrogen levels but not enough progesterone to balance its effects on the body. Progesterone, with the aid of cholesterol, is the stepping stone hormone involved in the production of cortisol, testosterone, and estrogen.
If the estrogen/progesterone balance is off, it can cause many unwanted symptoms such as increased breast cancer risk, thyroid disorders, high blood pressure, decreased sex drive, dry eyes, migraine headaches, infertility, vaginal dryness, and inflammation, just to mention a few.
An increase in estrogen production might happen normally or even be genetic, but one of the main concepts that the late healthcare pioneer Dr. John Lee promoted was that the overall estrogen levels in men and women are too high because of xenoestrogens.
These are man-made chemicals in the environment that mimic estrogen in our bodies. Our cells can’t always distinguish between our own estrogen and xenoestrogens. Many Xenoestrogens are proven carcinogens and can damage the immune system and interrupt hormonal balance. Our bodies are very resilient but are not designed to fight off these copycat chemicals.
Some of the main contributors of xenoestrogens that cause estrogenic effects are:
- Pesticides
- Sunscreens
- Phthalates and Parabens (found in plastics)
- PCB’s and PVC’s (chlorine by-products)
- Growth Hormones given to livestock and poultry
According to the American Cancer Society, “2 out of 3 breast cancers are hormone receptor-positive” meaning their cells have receptors that attach to estrogen or progesterone. They also note that “high estrogen levels help the cancer cells grow and spread”. In order to help keep your estrogen levels down:
- Avoid xenoestrogens
- Reduce stress in your life (meditation and EFT)
- Add live, raw foods to your diet (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, green smoothies)
- Find an exercise that you LOVE to do
