FAQIs thermography safe?
Yes, the infrared camera used is FDA registered and clinical thermography has been used in the United States and Europe for over thirty years. Thermography is a non-invasive test where nothing is injected into the body. It simply creates an image of the heat being emitted from the body without the use of radiation or compression. How does it work? Thermography is a simple screening using a digital infrared camera to visualize and obtain an image of the heat being emitted from the skin's surface. Since there is a high degree of symmetry in the normal body, a change in temperature patterns can indicate physiological changes in the body. Who will take the images? A specially trained ACCT certified technician will take your images. Female technicians will perform all breast scans. Is it accurate? Yes. As a routine screening tool, it has been shown to be effective at detecting breast abnormalities. One study tracked over 1,500 women for 12 years who had normal mammograms and physical exams but abnormal thermograms. Within 5 years, 40% of the women developed malignancies. The conclusion stated that "an abnormal thermogram is the single most important marker of high risk for the future development of breast cancer." Will I receive a copy of my report? Yes, you will receive your board certified physician interpretation within a week as a secure, encrypted PDF file via email. A copy of your report can be e-mailed to a practitioner of your choice at no charge. We will be glad to send any additional copies for a charge of $10 each. Is thermal imaging a replacement for mammography? Thermal imaging can detect the potential presence of a tumor years before a mammogram can see it. Using a combination of available screening methods will increase your chances of detecting breast cancer at an early stage. While breast cancer can only be diagnosed by a tissue biopsy, thermography provides vital information and serves as a breast health risk assessment. Empowering yourself with the most updated information can help you make better health related choices. Do I need a doctor's order to have this screening? No. Thermography offers you the opportunity to be pro-active in your health decisions. Will health insurance cover the cost of my thermogram? Currently, most insurance companies do not cover thermography. You should check with your individual company. We will provide you with an itemized receipt that you can send to your insurance company. However, it may be reimbursed though your FSA (flexible spending account) or HSA (health savings account).
