Breast Cancer... Let's bring the numbers down!

5/3/2015

Government researchers reported in April, at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, that "new breast cancer cases in the U.S. are forecast to rise by as much as 50% by 2030." They estimated that "the total number of new breast cancer cases would increase from 283,000 in 2011 to an estimated 441,000 in 2030." These are very scary statistics! http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-breast-cancer-cases-2030-20150420-story.html

The study offered no theories as to the causes associated with this increase in numbers. With so much focus on the awareness, early detection, and treatment of breast cancer, it seems that the numbers should be decreasing. Apparently we are missing something. Maybe PREVENTION?

Statistics show that the risk of getting breast cancer increases with age. Approximately 77% of women are over 50 when diagnosed with breast cancer. Could the accumulation of radiation from having a mammogram, year after year (with many recalls), contribute to the increase in breast cancer as women age? It's something to think about. (Breast thermography is radiation free!)

What about our environment? A woman's exposure to the hormone estrogen is associated with her risk of developing breast cancer. Certain chemicals in the environment act like estrogen in our bodies. A few examples of these "xenoestrogens" that build up in our bodies over a lifetime are weed killers, pesticides, and plastics.

Some proof of this is stated on the Breast Cancer Action website where it says: "Non-industrialized countries have lower breast cancer rates than industrialized countries. People who move to industrialized countries from countries with low rates develop the same breast cancer rates of the industrialized country."
As Benjamin Franklin said, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." What are some things we can do to be more cautious? Here's what the Breast Cancer Action website suggests. (http://www.bcaction.org/)

By taking these suggestions to heart, hopefully we will be able to change these predicted statistics and send the numbers down instead of up.
  • Acting now, even before definitive scientific proof of harm, to reduce and eliminate practices that we suspect do harm to human health or the environment because lack of evidence does not equal lack of harm.
  • Seeking out alternatives to activities that pose a threat to human health or the environment.
  • Shifting the burden of proof so that the companies that make and profit from products and activities must prove that they are safe, rather than the current situation where the public is required to prove that something is harmful before it’s stopped.
  • Using an open, informed and democratic process that involves affected communities in decisions being made about their health and their environment.

Sports injuries: Is it fully healed? Can I play again?

8/13/2014

Stress Fracture
Just about any area of the body can be affected by a sports injury. It takes a lot of patience to wait for an injury to heal enough to be able to get "back into the game." Even then, what assurance is there that the injury is totally healed? Repeated x-rays and MRIs can be detrimental, especially to young bodies that are still growing. Resuming sports without complete healing can lead to long term complications.

Radiation free thermography (digital infrared thermal imaging) has proven to be very valuable in assessing healing throughout the body. It can detect and locate thermal abnormalities by measuring the heat being emitted from the body surface. These increases and decreases in skin temperature directly correlate with the temperature in designated areas of the body.

An injury causes variations in the blood flow to the affected areas. Inflammation leads to hyperthermia (increased heat) while degeneration, which is characterized by reduced muscular activity and decreased blood flow, may cause decreased heat (hypothermia).

In addition to evaluating for inflammation and/or degeneration, thermal imaging can also monitor for changes and effectiveness of treatments, such as physical therapy and acupuncture.

Thermography is useful in the evaluation of ankle injuries, shin splints, stress fractures, myofascial pain syndromes, shoulder injuries, foot pain, vascular disorders, spinal pain syndromes, and many others.

With a thermography scan, you can be assured that you or your child/teen is ready to tackle the stress of being "back in the game."

The Lymphatic System: Vital to your health

Lymphatic SystemClick on image to enlarge
The lymphatic system is a part of the circulatory system and vital to the body's immune system. It works with the immune system to remove and destroy waste, debris, dead blood cells, pathogens, toxins, and cancer cells from the body.

The vessels of the lymphatic system spread through all parts of the body (see image to the right), similar to blood circulation in the arteries and veins, and carries colorless liquid called lymph. Hundreds of small kidney-shaped organs, called lymph nodes, carry lymph fluid, nutrients, and waste material between the body tissue and the bloodstream. While the lymph nodes act as a filter of debris, they also contain specialized white blood cells called lymphocytes that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. This filtering process helps the body to fight infection.

The body works to fight disease in several ways:
  • The body temperature begins to rise out of its normal range – speeding up the body's response to fight infection
  • and the inflammatory process is initiated – allowing increased blood flow to battle the infection

These are just some of the ways that the lymphatic system works at maintaining homeostasis of the body. That's why optimum flow of the lymphatic system is crucial to our health. Since the lymphatic system has no pump of its own, external forces are essential in helping to pump the fluid throughout the body.

Three ways to help activate the lymphatic system are:
  • Deep breathing
  • Rebounding (trampoline)
  • Lymphatic drainage massage

Keeping the lymph fluid free-flowing in the axillary (underarm) lymph vessels is crucial in maintaining good breast health. Breast thermography (thermal imaging) provides evaluation of the axillary lymph system in addition to the breast and upper chest.

Thermography measures the heat being emitted from the body's surface showing temperature increases when there is congestion or inflammation. These temperature differentials provide a glance into the body's physiology, suggesting that lymphatic activity needs to be increased or that, hopefully, it is functioning as it should. Monitoring lymphatic system functioning with this radiation free health screening provides important information that can help your body function at maximum ability.

We provide instruction on breast lymphatic drainage. Contact us for more information.

What is your stroke risk?

5/8/2014

May is Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke kills about 130,000 Americans each year and is a leading cause of serious long term disability. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) the following are signs of a stroke in men and women. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should call 911 immediately.

  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

What can you do to prevent a stroke? The best way seems to be maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

But how do you know if you are at risk for developing a stroke? We're all familiar with the term "seeing is believing." A radiation-free screening of the head/neck region using clinical thermography can detect inflammation of the carotid arteries, the first indicator that there may be occlusive disease developing. If not reversed, this occlusion can eventually lead to a stroke!
Carotid Artery
Once thermography detects plaque build-up in the arteries, there are many natural methods available to help reverse it and prevent a stroke from ever happening.
Take a preventative approach!

Call us at 901-249-8642 or visit our website at memphisthermography.com to schedule your appointment for a head/neck screening in the month of May and receive $25 off.

The head/neck screening includes MD interpretation of: sinus, dental, thyroid, carotid, cervical neck, and upper gastric area.

Is there more to spring than just cleaning?

4/8/2014

Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. As we see the miracles budding and blooming all around us, most of us gear up for spring cleaning. But as we discover all of nature's changes outside, it's a great time to take a look inside. Renewal from the inside out! As it's happening around us, it awakens in us a chance to begin again. It's a time for realizing possibilities and making way for new commitments.

Perhaps taking care of our health is a commitment we need to take more seriously. We often wonder what's going on inside our bodies that we can't see. Thermography is a safe, radiation free screening that offers a glance into the body's physiology – the function and activity of all living organisms. Thermography can "visualize" changes in our health, through evaluation of the heat being emitted from the body surface, and lets us know when further investigation is needed. When used as a preventive screening, the disease process can be caught at an early stage, allowing us time to make lifestyle changes that can stop the progression of the illness. It can motivate us to begin again, start anew, and commit to better health.

Back to the spring cleaning and how it can be part of our commitment to better health… Many of the products used to clean our homes are unhealthy and give off toxic fumes. I know cleaning the shower with the mold and mildew type sprays definitely makes it difficult to breathe. KeeperOfTheHome.org is one of the many sites available that give instructions to make homemade, healthy alternatives.
To receive a $25 discount on your "inside/out" spring cleaning,
call 901 249-8642 and schedule your full body screening by May 9th, 2014.

Help us spread the word about this safe, radiation free screening.

Are you looking for a safe way to monitor your breast health?

2/23/2014

There have been a lot of articles lately questioning the value of routine mammography. You might have heard about the recent study done in Canada about mammography and its ability to save lives. The 25 year study, following 90,000 women ages 40-59, was published in the British Medical Journal. The study compared breast cancer incidence and mortality in those women who either had or didn't have mammography screening.

Some of the conclusions of the study were that regular mammogram screenings do not reduce breast cancer death rates and that women in the mammography group were more likely to be misdiagnosed (or over diagnosed) with breast cancer that wasn't there.

If you think about it, exposing healthy breasts to radiation, year after year, as a form of early detection and prevention makes no sense--especially since radiation has been shown to cause cancer! According to the American Cancer Society (cancer.org), one of the cancers included in the list of those most strongly linked to radiation exposure is breast cancer.

So what are women to do? Why should we take a healthy part of our bodies and expose it to danger year after year? Could the so called "cure" be part of the cause? Women need a safe way to monitor breast health!

Breast thermography is definitely part of the answer! Thermography provides the opportunity to detect changes at any stage in the development of a breast tumor. Signs of breast cancer can be seen as early as the first year and onward. With mammography, tumors aren't dense enough to be seen until around the 8th year. This very early detection though thermography provides the chance for early intervention. Preventative treatment, which includes lifestyle changes and vitamin/mineral optimization, have been shown to improve breast health when it is caught in the earliest stages.

Breast Thermography - For YOU!

9/3/2013

Thermal Imaging in Progress
When I talk with people about the uses and benefits of Thermography, I have found their responses to be very interesting. It's as if they assume it is good for others but not important for themselves. Thermography has many uses throughout the body but I am referring specifically to breast thermography.

What each and every woman needs to know is that breast thermography is not just for others! Breast thermography is important for every woman starting in her early twenties. Thermography is important for YOU, and can offer information not available with other screenings.

I'm not suggesting giving up other screening methods. I'm suggesting adding a safe and easy screening that can only benefit women with increased information. With all of the money and attention being used to research cures for breast cancer, how far have we really come? Every day we are still touched by a friend or family member that has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

What makes us so resistant to taking things into our own hands and becoming proactive in our own health care?

Don't we want to use every resource available to us to prevent this disease?

Why wouldn't every woman want to take every step possible to increase her chances for prevention and early detection of breast cancer?

Must we resort to thinking that cutting off our breasts is a normal act of prevention?

Please take this disease seriously! According to the American Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Don't be part of the statistic! Take care of yourself! YOU DESERVE IT!
